Summer Staff Ministry Opportunities

We desire to invest in our Summer Staff. It is our goal to set aside 12 weeks to disciple young adults through small groups, worship, teaching and one-on-one relationships.

Positions Available

Recreation/Lifeguards: Your responsibilities will include helping the guests in the recreation center and will require some outdoor recreation. You will be trained in the snack shop, gift shop, indoor recreation, and outdoor recreation and will rotate between these positions throughout the summer. You will also be involved in the weekly cleaning day between guest groups. During that day, the staff cleans the camp facilities in order to prepare for the arriving groups.

  • Obligations:
  1. Each rec staff and lifeguard staff will be required to work 3 evenings in the rec a week (8:30-11pm)
  2. Each rec staff will be rotated through most of the positions (gift/snack shop, bowling, rock wall, front desk, etc) Lifeguards will be rotated as needed.
  3. All rec staff MUST be at First Orientation in order to be adequately trained in all positions.
  4. Hike leaders will be rotated each week. Only certain recreation staff will participate in leading hikes, leading low and high ropes, leading kayaking, and facilitating the Alpine Swing.
  5. Lifeguards - This position requires you to be American Red Cross lifeguard certified before you arrive. You will rotate between the waterslide and pool. There will also be daily assigned tasks and a weekly clean up day that everyone helps with to quickly prepare for arriving groups.

Assistant Wrangler: You will assist the Head Wrangler with daily barn/horse chores and do rides for the guests. Previous horse experience is required.

  • Obligations:
  1. Assistant Wrangler must have at least ONE year of prior experience.
  2. The Head Wrangler will train his/her staff in the Horn Creek program and its requirements. Assistant Wranglers must be willing to learn new and different methods from previous experiences.

Assistant Cook: We would like someone with knowledge of cooking; experience is a plus but not a must. You will be assisting a Head Cook who provides three meals per day to guests and staff.

  • Obligations:
  1. All cooks will receive orientation and kitchen training during the first two weeks upon arrival.
  2. Assistant Cooks must be willing to operate a kitchen as “acting lead cooks” when Head Cooks are off duty.
  3. Cooks will begin their day around 7:00AM and finish around 8:00PM with a long afternoon break.
  4. Cooks must be flexible with the following: group size, group diversity, food allergies, revolving staff, young staff, older facilities and older cooking equipment.

Server/Housekeeper: Your responsibilities will include serving three meals a day. There is also a weekly cleaning day between guest groups. During that day, the staff cleans the cabins and prepares the dining hall for the new arriving group.

  • Obligations:
  1. Servers have an up-front role with guests at meals, during programming times, and when asked to meet guest requests.
  2. A desire to get to know the guests from week to week, all summer.

Server/Housekeeper/Nursery: Your responsibilities will include the same as Server/Housekeeper. You will run the nursery program at the specific camp you are assigned to during the nightly worship and teaching session.

  • Obligations:
  1. Servers have an up-front role with guests at meals, during programming times, and when asked to meet guest requests.
  2. A desire to get to know the guests from week to week, all summer.

Grounds Keeper: We need staff who want to be outdoors all summer and have familiarity with power tools and lawn equipment. Job specifics include but are not limited to: mowing, trimming, lumberjacking (will be trained and certified before operating chain saws), painting, general facility repairs, and landscaping. This position will be physically demanding.

Assistant Crew Leader: You will assist the Crew Leader with daily work in the dining room and kitchen.

  • Obligations:
  1. Asst. Crew Leaders must be willing and able to lead their peers as they delegate tasks to the serving crew at each camp.
  2. Asst. CL’s will coordinate their effort alongside the Head Cook and the Camp Manager/Host of each camp. Clear and concise communication is necessary to a smooth camp operation.
  3. Must be gifted and with a history in detail orientation. Previous experience in leading a crew is beneficial to this position.

Programmers: You will have a significant up front role with guests at each of our Family Camps. The role includes leadership in all games, nightly camp activities, crafts, outdoor education, skits, communication of daily events, and general announcements to guests.

  • Obligations:
  1. This person must be able to lead groups up to 150 people, speak in the public setting, and independently organize activities.
  2. The programming role is highly relational and will encompass all parts of the day from 8AM to 10PM.
  3. Previous camp experience is a must.

Opportunities this Summer

  • 3-4 day orientation that may include a camping trip.
  • 1 day Noah’s Ark rafting trip on the Arkansas River
  • Organized summer staff activities.
  • Sunday morning worship and other group activities with Campus Crusade for Christ summer staff and Horn Creek summer staff.
  • Local recreation: rafting, hiking, horseback riding, biking, etc.

Local attractions: Denver, Colorado Springs and the rest of the beautiful Front Range

Terms of Service

We expect a full term from each summer employee. A full term is classified as either May 19- August 15, 2008 OR May 27-August 15, 2008. Summer Staff employees should expect to depart Horn Creek property no earlier than August 16th. However, in some cases a shorter term is agreed upon in the summer employment offer letter. Once an employee contract has been signed dates may not be changed. First priority is given to individuals that can commit to a full term.

Monday May 19, 2008-Thursday May 22, 2008 1st Orientation
*Recreation staff MUST attend the first orientation due to adequate training

Monday May 26, 2008 2nd Summer Staff arrival date
Tuesday May 27, 2008-Thursday May 29, 2008 2nd Orientation

Qualifications

We seek staff who have a vibrant personal relationship with Jesus Christ and agree with Horn Creek’s Statement of Faith.  We also seek a willingness to be flexible in the capacity in which you will serve and strengths that lend themselves to a servant hood mindset.  Our summer staff program has been developed for individuals between the ages of 18-24.    

Compensation

Housing and food will be covered 100% throughout the entire summer. 
1st year staffers, $650/mo + tips
2nd year staffers, $750/mo + tips
3rd+ year staffers, $850/mo + tips
We offer a $200 bonus for staffs that fulfill their commitment to work from the 1st or 2nd orientation through August 15th.
*Tips average $50/week and are distributed with monthly paycheck.
